Most budgets fail because they're written from memory, and memory is an optimist. Your bank statement isn't. It already lists every coffee, every subscription you forgot about, and every fee. The problem is that nobody wants to spend an evening sorting 35 lines into categories. That sorting is exactly the job AI does well. With the holidays starting this month, last month's statement is the best budgeting tool you have.
The short answer: Export last month's transactions and delete everything except the date, description and amount. Turn off ChatGPT's "Improve the model for everyone" setting, then paste the lines in with the prompt below. You don't need an account. You get category totals, your recurring charges, flags for fees and possible duplicates, and a budget for next month. With a free account, you can upload the file instead (3 uploads a day).
Step 1: Export one statement
In your bank's website or app, export last month's transactions for your main checking account. Choose CSV if it's offered, since it's the easiest to clean up.
Step 2: Strip out anything that identifies you
Do this before anything goes into a chat. Delete every row and column except date, description and amount. That removes your name, address and account number. If you only have a PDF, copy just the transaction lines.
Step 3: Keep the chat out of training
No account: At chatgpt.com, open Settings → Data controls and turn off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI says that when you're signed out, your choice is saved in that browser.
Free account: Use a Temporary Chat. Start a new chat, select Temporary, and turn personalization off (Unpersonalized) before you type anything. According to OpenAI's Temporary Chat FAQ, it won't appear in your history, won't create memories and isn't used to train models, though OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety. Don't save it afterward. For a permanent change instead, turn off Improve the model for everyone under Settings → Data controls, and turn off Memory under Settings → Personalization.
Either way, skip the thumbs-up and thumbs-down buttons. OpenAI says that if you rate a response, the entire conversation may be used for training, even after you've opted out.
Step 4: Paste the lines and the prompt
Paste your cleaned transaction lines, then this prompt below them:
Above is my checking account statement for October. I removed my name and account numbers. 1. Put every transaction into a category (housing, groceries, eating out, transportation, utilities and phone, subscriptions, debt payments, savings, shopping, health, fees, other). Give me a table with each category's total and its share of my spending. 2. List every recurring charge and subscription with the amount and date it hit. 3. Flag anything that looks like a duplicate, a fee, or a charge I might not expect. 4. Using my actual income from this statement, build a November budget. Include a line for holiday gifts and keep savings at least where it is now. Show it as a table I can paste into a spreadsheet. Show your math. If you can't read a line, list it separately instead of guessing.
With a free account, you can attach the CSV instead. Click +, then Add photos & files. Free accounts get 3 file uploads a day, so upload one clean file rather than several drafts.
Step 5: Check the totals yourself
Add up your statement's withdrawals and compare the sum with the chatbot's total. If they don't match, ask which lines it skipped. It takes two minutes, and it's the difference between a budget and a guess.
What you end up with
We pasted a made-up 35-transaction October statement into ChatGPT with this prompt. Here are excerpts (ChatGPT, no account, Oct 28, 2026):
Total spending: $3,171.96 · Total income: $4,900.00
Possible duplicate — Coffee Corner. October 18 · $6.75 each. Two identical charges appear on the same date… They could be two legitimate purchases, but check your receipt or card activity to confirm.
Unexpected subscription risk — StreamPlus. October 26 · $89.99. "Annual trial conversion" suggests a trial may have converted into a paid annual plan.
Bank fee — Overdraft. October 28 · $35.00. Ask your bank whether the fee can be waived…
It also built a November budget that includes $250 for holiday gifts, allocates exactly $4,900, and comes as a CSV you can paste into a spreadsheet. We checked every figure above against the statement with a script, and they all matched to the cent. That's a good result, and Step 5 is still the step you can't skip. The chatbot's math is only as trustworthy as the lines you gave it.
So what?
A budget built from what you actually spent beats one built from what you hope to spend. AI turns that from an evening of work into a single prompt. Do it this week, before the holiday charges start piling up. Strip the file, turn off training, and check the total.
